William: I am an international student with F-1 visa. Recently, a friend asked me to help his on-line business with the pay as my part-time job. Do you think this is a on-campus job? Can I take this on-line business job with pay as F-1 student without work authorization? Answer: Many F-1 students know they are not supposed to work without any authorization. However, without work authorization, F-1 students must be careful not to inadvertently engage in unauthorized employment by helping with friends' businesses, or internet selling and other such ventures. Also, the internet related work is not on-campus job. Additionally, students must be careful to avoid committing violations when they are engaged in on-campus employment. This can occur when students exceed the allowed number of hours - 20 hours per week when the school is in session and full-time during scheduled breaks, or continue on-campus employment after expiration of the I-20. |
