I would like to file for a self-petitioned EB1-EA,  in parallel to an EB2 petition previously filed by my employer through Labor Certification RIR, which is still waiting for process after 8 months. 

Would this be acceptable by the USCIS or do I need to cancel the latter prior to filing the EB1-EA petition?

It is acceptable for USCIS to accept your self-petitioned EB1-EA, in parallel to an EB2 petition previously filed by your employer. Because they are in different immigration categories. In this way, it will increase your chance of I-140 approval. You do not need to cancel your employer-sponsored petition for the new EB1-EA petition.
