How to Renew My F-1 Status after a Study Break?

Hi William:

I am currently a F-1 student in United States. I need to take a break about 6 months from my study in U.S. to go back to my home country for a family reason. Please let me know how to keep my F-1 status? or how to renew my F-1 status after a study break?

Answer:

If you need to take an extended break, an approval should be obtained from your school. If appropriately approved, your SEVIS record will be terminated as an authorized withdrawal. You will receive a new I-20 and SEVIS registration when you are ready to resume your study.

If you want to return to school in the United States after a break of more than five months, it is necessary to reapply for a visa at the U.S. consulate. You need a valid I-20 from the school and must verify with the school that the SEVIS record is in active status.
