After NIW reen Card Approval, Can I Apply for a Non-Restricted SSN?

Hi William,

I received my NIW-based Green Card approval recently. Thank you very much for your great help!

I have a restricted Social Security Card with an annotation “VALID FOR WORK ONLY WITH DHS AUTHORIZATION”. Can I continue to use it? or can I apply for a non-restricted Social Security Card?

Answer,

You should contact your local SSA (Social Security Administration) to update your immigration records. You may continue to use your Social Security Card, but you should also present your Green Card for the purpose of verifying your employment eligibility.

Alternatively, you may apply for a replacement SSN card at your local SSA, by submitting Form SS-5 and provide a copy of your Green Card as proof of your new unrestricted work eligibility. You will be issued an unrestricted social security card, but your SSN number will remain the same.
