Do I Have to Report My Absent Period When Filing the Naturalization Form Later?

9/27/2006

Dr. William:

I received my Green Card last year, and I plan to stay outside U.S. for a few months because of the business reason. I want to know if the USCIS will have my record of leaving the U.S., or I have to report this absent period when filing the naturalization form later?

A: The agencies of USCIS, USICE, and CBP have their databases to handle the immigration issues. The immigration checks are managed through the Interagency Border Inspection System, and multi-agency effort has been applied to compile data relating to public safety issues.

At the time of U.S. citizen naturalization, you are required to bring all passports and records that you have had since becoming permanent residents. Failure to tell the truth at the time of naturalization interview with USCIS can be the basis of lack the good moral character, which would bar the individual from naturalizing for another five years.
