Can I Extend My Parents' B-2 Visa for Another 6 Months in U.S.

Dr. William:

My parents are currently in U.S. to visit us on a visitor's B-2 visa. Their I-94 will expire after 2 months. I want to know if they can extend their B-2 visa for another 6 months in the U.S.? or they can go to Canada to get a new I-94?

A: Your parents can extend their B-2 visa for another 6 months in the U.S. But extending the B-2 status beyond 6 months has a good chance of getting denied from the consulate for any future U.S. visit, because it clearly shows no strong ties to their home country.

Also, traveling to Canada will not allow your parents to obtain another I-94 card, since the contiguous territory rule requires that a person will not obtain a new I-94 card if the visit to Canada or Mexico is for 30 days or less than 30 days.
